PRESENTS
PARAISO
September 21st — October 27th
New York, NY —The first edition of Concordia Art Show presents Paraíso—a group exhibit featuring works by artists María Elena Valdés (Puebla), Rodrigo Chapa (Monterrey), Salome Coronel (Quito), and Alex De la Torre (Barranquilla).
Curated by Danielle Juliao, the exhibit taps into a sensitive journey to decode an amalgam of raw, intricate, warm, unprecedented ideas and visual stories, all connected by one very genuine and recurrent principle – a pursuit of joy, and how it is approached by Latin artists of different mediums and backgrounds. By shifting away from the world’s predominant examinations of politics in the region, this exhibition looks to shed light upon Latin America’s quotidian beauty, liberties and complexities.

ABOUT THE artists
Salome Coronel
Multimedia Artist
Quito, Ecuador
Salome Coronel currently lives and works in Bogotá. She graduated from a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Fashion with emphasis in Fashion Product from Parsons The New School for Design, New York, New York (2014-2018). Her work is influenced by her current and past realities, prioritizing the documentation of mundane and everyday elements that make up her life in Colombia’s capital city. Growing up in Quito also exposed Coronel to a variety of baroque architecture buildings commonly used to display realist art, which has had a lasting impact on her body of work. In her artistic practice, she mainly explores (but not limits to) the medium of painting, relying on popular culture scenarios and zooming in on street details to depict her vision.

Alex De La Torre
Painter
Barranquilla, Colombia
Alex De La Torre currently lives and works in Barranquilla. He graduated from Fine Arts from la Universidad Del Atlántico (2001). During his time there, he had the pleasure of assisting Colombian masters Manuel Bustos and Haime Alvarez Correa, helping him shape his own identity while being influenced by the latter. Although his work is heavily figurative, he also gives importance to the materials he uses as canvases, creating a conversation between form, color, and emblematic Colombian motifs that are only recognizable by those who grew up in the country. He explores ecological activism in a few of his series while depicting more urban elements characteristic of the Caribbean coast.
